Overview of the recording process using the BlackMagic Hyperdeck Recorder

Body

During LIVE production it is always a good idea to record the Live event as a backup.

The BM Hyperdeck Mini is setup to record the Program output of the ATEM switcher.

The recorder has 2 SD card slots for recording. You can use a single card in either slot 1 or slot 2 or you can use 2 cards at the same time.  The recorder will automatically switch to the next card with the record maximum has been reached.

It is recommended that you use high quality SD Cards that are Class 10 with a write speed of 80 MB/s or higher for HD video and 110 MB/s for UHD video.

The record interface – Press the record button with the circle to start the recording. The circle will light up Red, a red light will appear above the SD Card that is being used and you will see the red circle in the upper left of the video display.

Press the stop button (square) to stop the recording.

The large numbers above the video image will be counting up during the recording, if the numbers are not moving you are not recording.

The audio meters to the right of the image will indicate the audio level that is being recorded. The lower levels will display in Green, then transition to Yellow and at the top of the level indicator turn to Red.

Proper Audio levels will remain in the Green area. Occasional peaks in the Yellow is OK.  Audio that is recorded in the Red level will sound distorted and mat not be usable.

The Hyperdeck mini can record in a number of different file formats. Each Format can be set to a different quality level for that specific format. This recorder is currently set to record H264 at the highest quality.

H 264  (General use for Web, Video editing and Archiving)
Apple Pro Res 422 (Primarily used for editing with Apple computers and professional video editing programs.)
DnxHD (Used for Professional Editing programs such as Avid.)

Your SD Card will need to be formatted for use with this recorder. Using the Menu controls available you can format the SD Card with the recorder.

For more recording options please see the Blackmagic Hyperdeck Mini Operation Manual.

You can playback your recording directly from the Hyperdeck Mini.
Any HDMI monitor can be connected to the HDMI output of the Hyperdeck, this will provide
Audio and video confirmation of the recording.  Or you can remove the SD card and copy files
to a computer for playback.
