Purpose: How to set up/transfer MFA methods to new phone
Introduction
If you have a new phone, you will need to configure it to work with Multi-Factor authentication.
Microsoft Authenticator App Cloud Backup
If on your old mobile device you had Cloud Backup enabled, your Microsoft Authenticator accounts may be restored when you sign in on your new mobile device. However, a warning on the St FX authenticator account may indicate that you need to re-scan the QR code. To do so, follow the steps below, but rather than adding a new account in the Authenticator App, tap the existing St FX account displaying the warning, and re-scan the QR code shown in step 9 below.
Setting Up Multi-Factor Authentication On a New Phone
- On your laptop or desktop, log in to your Office365 account.
- In the upper right corner, click the gear icon.
- Expand the Additional Security Verification section and click "Update your phone numbers used for account security". A new window will open.
- Click the + Add Method button.
- In the pop-up, make sure Authenticator App is selected, and click Add
- You will be prompted to download the app. If you have not already installed the Microsoft Authenticator app on your new mobile device, do so now.
- Click Next.
- Follow the on-screen instructions regarding notifications.
- The QR code for Microsoft Authenticator will now be displayed.
- Open the Microsoft Authenticator App on your smartphone
- Click the three dots in the top right corner, and click "Add Account".
- Select Work or School Account
- Use your mobile device's camera to scan the QR code.
- On your laptop or desktop, click Next
- You will now be prompted on your mobile device; select Approve
