Body

Set Tramble Centre for Accessible Learning (TCAL) timing accommodations in Moodle quizzes

This article is intended to help professors and course instructors with the process of setting time accommodations for a Moodle quiz (exam, test, quiz, etc.) in Moodle with students who are being supported by the Tramble Centre for Accessible Learning. This article requires you to have editing level privileges in Moodle.

The recommended process involves three distinct steps.

Step 1: Create a Tramble Centre for Accessible Learning (TCAL) group in Moodle.

Step 2: Manage group membership (add students who have Tramble Centre accommodations to the TCAL group in Moodle).

Step 3: Create a TCAL group override and adjust the timing as needed.

Please follow the steps in order as shown

Step 1: Create the Tramble Centre for Accessible Learning (TCAL) group in Moodle

Note: This group membership must be kept confidential for privacy reasons. This group should never be part of any link that reveals group membership.

Create the TCAL Group

1. Log in to Moodle and open the course you want to work with.

2. Click Participants tab at the top of the Moodle course page directly under the course name.

3. Select Groups In the dropdown menu at the top left of the page (default shows Enrolled Users).

4. The system displays the Group screen with two panels. If you see a group named TCAL in the left panel, go directly to Step 2: Manage Group Membership in Moodle section below for help on adding/removing students from an existing group.

5. If there is no TCAL group already showing in the left panel:

  • Click Create Group (from the options near the bottom of the page in the Manage section. You may have to scroll to see this).
  • Type TCAL For Group name field.
  • Ignore both the Group ID number field.
  • Ignore Group description field.
  • Ignore the Enrolment key field. This field may pick up a saved password from the browser, if it does make sure to remove it.
  • Select Visible (Visible is the default setting) in the Group membership visibility field. This is important for protecting the privacy of the TCAL group members.
  • Remove the checkmark next to the Show group in dropdown menu for activities in group mode. This is important for protecting the privacy of the TCAL group members.
  • Select No (No is the default setting) for Group messaging field. This is important for protecting the privacy of the TCAL group members.
  • Ignore New picture field.
  • Click Save changes.
  • The system displays the Groups screen with the two panels.
  • Click the TCAL group in the left panel.
  • Click Edit group settings (from the options near the bottom of the page in the With selected section).
  • Scroll to Enrolment key field and make sure it is empty. (It should say “Click here to enter text”). If there is other text in this field, remove it.
  • Click Save changes.

Your TCAL group is now created but has no members. Proceed to Step 2: Manage Group Membership in Moodle section below.

  15. Your group override is now set.

Click Quiz tab at the top of the Moodle course page directly under the course name, to take you back to the main quiz area.
