Create a Print Version of Quiz

Please note: Some printed questions do not work as expected in print. For example, there are some questions which require a "drop-down" box" with a choice of answers. On paper, these show as a simple blank box. The work around is to add the answers in a random order to the question text, or avoid these types of questions (matching type questions).

Step 1: Hide current exam and duplicate.

  • In the Moodle course page, turn on editing in upper right corner.
  • On the Moodle course page, go to the quiz activity and find the 3 dots to the right (the ellipses). Select the ellipses.
  • In the pop-up menu, select Course availability. Select Hide.
  • Repeat. Click on the ellipses to the right of the quiz and select duplicate.

This will make a copy of the quiz with (copy) at the end of the title. It will also be hidden if the previous steps were taken.

Step 2: Changing settings in copied exam.

  • In the copied quiz, select settings at the top of quiz activity.
  • This will open a list of settings we can change. The copy must always remain hidden as all restrictions will be removed.
  • First change is the (copy) in the title. Change to (Paper exam only - Keep Hidden)
  • Scroll down to the other named settings. These will be listed below.
  • Timing setting - make sure there is no timing set on this specific quiz. It is only designed to be printed - not written online. Disable the timing entirely by unchecking the boxes for open and close.
  • Layout: The setting must be Never, all questions on one page for "New page" setting. This will help with printing.
  • Question behaviour: Unshuffle answers in questions so they will always be the same.
  • Safe Exam Browser: If this was added to original quiz, disable. Otherwise ignore this setting. There should be no Safe Exam Browser on.
  • Extra Restrictions on Attempts: All of this should be disabled - which it is by default. If Respondus or passwords were added to the original, remove the password and Respondus options.

The Quiz should now be ready for previewing with no restrictions. To have a paper "preview", a "description question needs to be added to the top of Questions.

  • On Quiz, go to Questions.
  • Make sure shuffle is turned off in the shuffle check box.
  • At the top of the list of questions, click the first Add to add a new question at the top of quiz.
  • select + a new question.
  • Choose a type of question - scroll to bottom of the list of choices. Other: Description. Description question allows an instructor to add instructions. It also allows to add the Course and quiz title, and leave a space for the name of the test taker. It has no point value.
  • Add title for Question. The word title would work in this case.
  • For description questions, add the Course name and quiz name. On a second line add the instructor name and office number and contact. On a third line add Name: and a blank space for test taker to add their information.
  • When previewing quiz, it strips out all the extra detail of the webpage, so in many cases, the printed quiz would have no title or spaced printed out to add name. The Description question adds this information back into the quiz.

Step 3: Preview and Print.

  • Go into the quiz.
  • Preview Quiz.
  • Quiz should have the Description Question at the beginning if it does not appear first. Go back into Questions of the Quiz, and move the Question to the top of the list.
  • In the Preview along with the Description question at the top, you can print the exam to pdf.
    • Go to the browser settings menu. This is normally located in the upper right corner ellipses (3 dots) of the browser.
    • Find the print option.
    • in the print option for printer, select save as pdf.
    • Rename the pdf file as the Course quiz.

After the quiz is printed, the quiz can be deleted, or saved for next year. If the gradebook is set up to exclude empty grades, and as long as it remains hidden, the quiz will not affect the grades of students (the non grade is not included in the grade totals).
