Body

There are many levels to quizzes in Moodle. This article will look at the very basic level. The purpose of a basic quiz might be a one-off quiz or a study quiz. Basic quizzes are not designed to be shared among different courses. An instructor may use a basic quiz for a major exam - however a major exam could use a slightly more complex version for randomization and duplication.

Instructions

  1. On the Moodle course page, turn editing on in the upper right corner.
  2. Locate the section a quiz would be added.
  3. Add an activity, and select Quiz.
  4. Name the quiz, and set up the timing for the quiz. This can be left open if no timing is required, such as a study quiz.
    • Timings for quizzes have 2 parts: When the quiz should be written (the window of time) and the length of time it should take. These should be different. The window of time should always be longer than the length of the quiz. For example, a 60-minutes quiz can start a minute or so earlier than 9:00 am. It also should finish after 10:00 am. The window should allow for technical issues of a personal computer. It is recommended there should be 5-15 minutes of extra window for getting into the exam. The length of time is still 60 minutes regardless of the window of time.
    • If there is no time during a class for this extra time, it is recommended make the length shorter - for example 50 minutes for a 60 minute window. Overall, the window should be longer than the exam length of time.
  5. Under Timing is Grade. In this setting there is a "show more". Number of attempts is in this section. You may wish to allow multiple attempts for a study quiz.
  6. Farther down the settings select Extra restrictions on attempts. (Optional password setting)
    • Create a password for the quiz so it has to be written in person. This requires a test-taker to be present to write the exam. The instructor can write the password on a whiteboard or screen. If this is a self-study quiz this should be skipped.
  7. Save the quiz and display.
  8. Inside the quiz, You can now add questions. Select add questions.
  9. On the questions page, far to the right and below the grade/points is the Add link. Click on Add.
  10. Add a new question.
  11. Select Multiple Choice or Essay or other type of questions and populate the questions.
  12. Once a number of questions are added the shuffle questions can be checked. By default most questions are 1 point. The total will display near the top. The maximum grade can be adjusted, and Moodle will automatically re-value the points of questions to add up to the maximum grade.
  13. Save the questions and point value.
  14. The basic quiz is ready for students. TCAL option is in related articles
