For calls made through the Chat tab:

There are three ways to make "calls" in the Chat tab:  1) through the Teams “meeting” function, 2) through an "audio/video call" and 3) through the teams “direct routing” function.

 

  1. The Meeting Function
    This will set up an audio/video meeting through the traditional Teams interface, at a pre-arranged time. This cannot be done on an ad-hoc basis and is generally set up via email. This makes no use of Direct Routing lines so no charges will be applied for “long-distance” participation.  This is handled via the internet through MS Teams alone.

 

  1. The Audio/Video call function:

    This will allow a user to place an immediate and direct call to a user in your tenant, using the call tab or call function in the chat box. This also works through the traditional Microsoft Teams interface and calls are delivered internally within the Microsoft Teams Tenant, without the use of the Public Service Telephone Network (PSTN).

 

  1. The Direct Routing function:

    This will make a telephone call through the PSTN.  This lets a user use the Teams interface to contact users outside of their tenant and allows outside callers to reach them via Teams in return. If a call is made to a user in another tenant or who is making use of a landline or mobile telephone, the Tenant will hand off to the PSTN to complete this call, subjecting the call to applicable rates.

    The difference is effectively meaningless for any calls placed using this key for calls within the tenant as Teams will prioritize delivery via the tenant where is able.

 

Long Distance Specifics:

  • Any calls within the StFX Teams tenant won’t be charged for long distance (LD), even for the Direct Routing calls. 
  • Meetings never make use of the DR function, so they never hit the PSTN to have LD apply. 
  • The normal conditions of a LD plan applies to anything outside of the Tenant places using the Direct Routing function.
