Brian Mulroney Institute of Government Video Studio - Audio Setup

Tags BMIG Studio

This studio incorporates an 8 Channel Audio mixer (QSC TouchMix 8), 3 wireless lapel microphones and 3 wireless IFB earpieces.

Audio from the 3 microphones feed directly into the audio mixer;
 Mic 1 > Channel 1, Mic 2 > Channel 2 & Mic 3 > Channel 3.

Audio from the Dejero Broadcast system which includes the reporter/interviewer audio is connected to Mixer Channel 4.  This audio is sent directly to the Mixer Aux Output and sent to the IFB Transmitter.

The QSC LCD Touch Screen will highlight each channel when selected.  You can manually adjust controls with your finger or use the large control dial on the right of the screen to move the channel fader up or down.

You select the screen interface by touching the desired control option on the left side of the screen and across the top of the screen.  MAIN MIX in the top left should be the default screen and will be used most of the time.  You may need to adjust the Aux outputs when using the IFB’s.  However these controls can be set in advance and left unchanged under normal operations.

Microphone Setup

Using one of the Wireless Mics, insert a fully charged battery into the Transmitter.  The front cover opens to reveal the battery compartment.  Turn on the power with the switch at the top of the transmitter. Each Mic transmitter has an assigned frequency that will send audio back to the Receiver. The battery display will indicate the time remaining for operation.

How to adjust Microphone for proper audio levels!

The process of calibrating the audio level is important to produce quality audio.  Follow these steps when setting up for recording or live interviews.

  1. Place the Microphone close to the mouth of the person speaking.  (6-10 inches)
  2. Select Main Mix from the Touch Screen
  3. On the Audio mixer, move the Channel Fader for the mic to the “U” – Unity position.
  4. Move the master Fader to the “U” – Unity position.
  5. Now with the subject speaking at the appropriate volume adjust the trim control for that channel located at the top of the channel fader (below the audio connector).
  6. Monitor the Audio level indicator next to the Master fader so that the level moves to the desired position when you Set the Trim control.
  7. If you are recording the production, confirm the audio levels on the Recorder are consistent with the Master levels on the mixer

Headphones should be used to monitor the audio quality, connection is located on the back of the mixer and volume control is accessed through the touch screen.
