Environment: Opening an Excel file, particularly Excel files on a network drive.
Purpose: To help fix the error "This file is locked for editing" and may indicate the file is read-only
Causes & Resolutions
Cause:
This error can be caused by another user having the file open. Check with others who have access to that file to make sure they aren't using it.
Once the other person has completed their work, have them notify you the file can now be edited by you.
Cause:
Sometimes, the "other user" is actually you, even though you have closed the file your computer may be keeping it open in the background.
Restarting your computer will allow you to regain access to the file.
