Best Practices Checklist

Best practice checklist when using Kwe' (Moodle) quizzes: 

(  ) Create and try a test quiz/exam with students prior to exam day 

(  ) If using Respondus have the students install it and test it in advance 

(  ) Hardwire to the network where possible 

(  ) Have students turn off devices and close apps drawing on the network  

(  ) Print off extra paper exams - or have a plan 'b' for online exams 

(  ) Add multiple attempts to test (should the quiz or Lockdown browser crash) 

(  ) Consider extending timelines 

 

Procedure

To build your quiz: 

1. Go to your course page and toggle editing on.

2. Click "Add an Activity or Resource". 

3. Choose "Quiz" and click "Add".

4. Name the quiz. 

5. Under "Timing" set a start time and end time for the quiz. 

 

6. Under "Review Options" in the 4th column (After the quiz is closed) check off "The attempt". 

  •  This way, students who complete the quiz will see that they have attempted it.  

  • If you would like students to see their mark after the quiz is completed and the quiz closes, choose "Marks". 

 

7. Choose "Save and Display" when complete. 

8. A new page will load. Click "Edit quiz" to add questions. 

 

9. Under "Add", choose "a new question". 

 

10. A new window will open. Scroll down and choose "Multiple Choice". Click "Add".

11. Under "Question name" name the quiz whatever you prefer. Ex: Unit 1. Enter the question under "Question text". *if adding media (pictures, video, audio) use the appropriate button to upload the media:

12. Change the default mark if necessary. 

13. Under "Answers", enter your choices and choose the grade from the dropdown menu:

 

 

14. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and choose "Save changes and continue editing" when the page loads again, scroll down, and click the preview button that has appeared. A new window will open, and you will see what the quiz question will look like. The red box outlines what the student will see: 

 

15. Close the preview and click "Save changes".

16. Repeat steps 9 to 15 to add new questions. 

17. Under "Maximum grade" change the grade to correspond to the total marks you have assigned in your quiz questions: 

18. Your quiz is now ready. 

Adding User Override

 

Optional: Adding a User Override (For Tramble Centre Students)

1. Go to the quiz that you would like to add an override on

 

2. Click the gear at the right of the page and choose User Overrides: 

 

3. Click Add User Override

 

4. Search the student's name and add timing to the quiz. This timing will only apply to that student:

NOTE: if your quiz is hidden, Moodle may show an error. Do not worry. The override is still active and will work.  

 

Adding Group Restrictions

You might want to create groups then create separate quizzes and restrict which students can see each quiz. 

1. First, you must create groups.  

2. Next, create multiple quizzes. 

3. Under each quiz, go to Edit Settings > scroll down to Restrict Access: 

 

4. Choose Add restriction:

 

5. Choose Groups:

 

6. Under Choose, pick the group that you would like to have access to the quiz. 

 

7. Save.  


Please note: When the quiz closes any open attempts are not counted, but answers are saved and visible to faculty
