Create a TCAL version of Moodle Quiz without Respondus.
Respondus quizzes limit the ability to use accessible features such as a screen reader. The first recommendation is to not use Respondus as an option. If an instructor feels it is necessary to use Respondus, it should be also stated that it is difficult to make fully reliable as it depends on multiple devices with variable settings and conditions. Some devices will not work; batteries and internet access may be an issue.
There will be many steps to building this, but it is pretty easy to follow the steps. We will add a TCAL group, copy the existing quiz, and lastly focus on gradebook if the gradebook is used inside Moodle.
After Respondus Quiz is setup:
Step 1: Create a Tramble Centre for Accessible Learning (TCAL) group in Moodle.
Note: This group membership must be kept confidential for privacy reasons. This group should never be part of any link that reveals group membership.
- Go to participants on the menu at the top of the course.
- In the upper left corner of the participants list, it will have “Enrolled Users” in a box – this is a drop-down menu. Please click this.
- Select Groups.
- In the manage menu, create a group – name it TCAL.
- Select the group TCAL to highlight, and “add users”.
- Now we can focus on the quiz.
- This group formation is required to view one of the 2 quizzes.
Step 2: Hide Quiz.
- Please ensure that the quiz is hidden from students while creating the TCAL exception. This requires creating a duplicate Quiz. With editing turned on for the Moodle page, you can click on the ellipses (3 dots) at the end of the line for the Quiz.
- In the options, select Hide Activity.
Step 3: Duplicate Quiz
- With the same ellipses, use the Duplicate option.
- This will create a “Quiz (copy)” in which the name and the settings can be adjusted.
- Rename this quiz with TCAL ONLY in the title.
- We will adjust restrictions so only TCAL will see this quiz, and non-TCAL will see the other quiz. We will refer to the 2 quizzes as Original and TCAL Only. This duplication should copy over all questions as well, but please double check questions are included in the duplicate.
Step 4: TCAL ONLY QUIZ SETTINGS:
- Disable Respondus:
- Go into the Quiz settings.
- Scroll down to Extra Restrictions on Attempts
- Click show more
- In the dropdown menu for browser security, select none
- Restrict Access
- In the quiz settings, scroll down to Restrict Access.
- Add restriction
- Select Group for restriction and “Must include”
- Select TCAL
- Click the eyeball icon until there is an eyeball with a line through it. This will make this specific quiz invisible to anyone except for TCAL.
- Save and return to the course.
- TCAL version is set – now the original needs to be hidden from TCAL.
Step 5: Original Quiz Settings
- Restrict Access
- Go into the Original Quiz settings.
- Scroll down to Restrict Access.
- Add TCAL and “Must not”.
- Click eyeball until it has a line through it.
- Save and return to the course.
Step 6: Show both quizzes.
- In Step 2, both quizzes would have been hidden. Below the Quiz name is grey wording (hidden from students). Click on this and show to students on both quizzes. The restrictions will appear for the instructor, while students will only see One quiz of the 2 – according to their restriction.
Step 7: Optional Grade book
This step is only if Moodle is used for grading.
Gradebook setup.
- In grades, click on dropdown menu in upper left that says Grader Report. Go to the Gradebook setup.
- In Gradebook, add a category.
- Name the Category after the Quiz, give it the same points as the 2 quizzes.
- Check the boxes beside each quiz (Original and TCAL) then click Move at the bottom of page.
- Select the correct Category to move the two quizzes.
- By default, this category will exclude empty grades. Assuming the students write ONE of the two quizzes, they will get full marks in the category. The non-attempt is ignored by gradebook.
