What is this service?
Drupal Web Content Management System (CMS) is an open source system that allows users to easily publish, manage and organize a large variety of content on a website. A Content Management System is a software system that allows individual users and departments (Content Editors), who may not know Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), to author and manage the creation, modification, and removal of content from a department website without needing the expertise of a Webmaster.
The Drupal open-source software is distributed under the GPL (“General Public License”) and is maintained and developed by a community of thousands of users and developers. Drupal is free to download and use.
The StFX Marketing and Communications Department and IT Service have developed and provided University Departments with a department website theme (look-and-feel) consistent with that of www.stfx.ca . The use of this theme provides a quick way to give a department website a StFX look-and-feel in line with University brand guidelines.
More information about Drupal is available at http://www.drupal.org.
Why is it useful?
No Programming Required
Users do not need knowledge of web editing to manage and edit a Drupal website. Using Drupal, Content Editors can change/update the department content easily. Drupal allows users with no technical or programming knowledge to create full featured websites.
Drupal Supports Collaborative Website Management
Two or more Content Editors can be editing different parts of a department website simultaneously (just not the same page concurrently).
Drupal is Web-Based
No special software is needed to edit web pages. The Drupal application is used with a web browser.
Style and Content are Separate
Content Editors can concentrate on creating and updating department content without worrying about the look-and-feel of the website. Styles and formatting, such as font sizes and color, are handled automatically by the system.
Reverting Back
Drupal gives Content Editors the ability to revert back to a previous version of content.
Things To Keep In Mind
- As part of the StFX family, it is recommended that your website maintain the clean and professionally designed look of www.stfx.ca
- Please use clear, concise copy
- It is advisable to wait until content is available before posting a page: unless your site gives an explicit date to check back for content ‘under construction’, it is better not to have an ‘under construction’ message
How do I access this service?
Department websites can only be edited by Content Editors. If you are a content editor and experiencing troubles use "Request Service" button to the right.
User requests for access to department websites must be submitted by the department chair (academic) or manager (administrative). Individual department users do not have privileges to grant access to other users.
