Setting up Respondus LockDown Browser in a Moodle Quiz - Best Practice

Using Respondus Lockdown Browser in a Moodle Quiz

Warning:

Respondus quizzes limit the ability to use accessible features such as a screen reader. The first recommendation is to not use Respondus as an option. If an instructor feels it is necessary to use Respondus, it should be also stated that it is difficult to make fully reliable as it depends on multiple devices with variable settings and conditions. Some devices will not work; batteries (power outlets) and internet access may be an issue.

Please refer to Create a TCAL version of Moodle Quiz without Respondus for creating the accessible version of online Moodle quiz.

After Moodle Quiz is Set up:

Step 1: Check all settings in the Quiz.

  • Click on Quiz and then select Settings in the top menu.
  • Scroll down to timing,
    • Timing consists of 3 values. Open date and time, Close date and time, and Timing. It is important the open and close times are longer than the timing. For example, if a quiz is set to be 60 minutes long, the open and closing times should allow a little extra time to log in and ensure the computer will work with the exam. There are many variables with technology which might happen to delay the starting time. A 60-minute quiz should open at 12:55pm for a 1 pm start, and close at 2:15 pm. This is a best practice.
    • Double check the YEAR if the quiz was copied over from a previous course.
  • In settings, scroll down to Extra Restrictions on Attempts.
    • In this section, create a password that can be given to those present. Not having a password means a student could write the exam from any location, even with the timing set.
    • Extra restrictions have a show more option. Select show more.
      • In the browser security option, there is a drop-down menu. Select the Browser should be set through Lockdown Browser Dashboard.
    • Save and return to Course.

Step 2: Add the Respondus Dashboard Block.

  • With Edit turned on open the ride side menu tab.
  • Select Add a Block and scroll down to select Respondus Dashboard. Skip this step if Block already shows in the side menu.
  • Enter the Respondus Dashboard.
  • The quizzes should be listed and if not set up, the Quiz should have the setting Lockdown Browser not required.
  • Click on the arrow to the left of the quiz that looks like a chevron (V)
  • Click on settings.
  • Select Require Lockdown Browser for this exam.
  • Save +Close

Step 3: Double check the quiz.

  • Go to the quiz.
  • The Page with the Preview button should appear.
    • There should be a notice This quiz has been configured so that students may only attempt it using the Respondus Lockdown Browser. It will also state - To attempt this quiz you need to know the quiz password.
  • In the upper right corner select your profile and switch role to option.
    • Select student.
    • In quiz, and assuming the student role, select preview quiz. You will now see Respondus warning in red and options to download Respondus or Check your Lockdown Browser setup.
  • Download Lockdown Browser (same as in the Exam entry)
  • Check your LockDown Browser Setup
    • This can help students make sure BEFORE exam day that their device will work.
    • It would be a good practice to add a notice in the Quiz section to Download and check the LockDown Browser well before exam day and add the above links to the Moodle page.
    • A second recommendation would have students bring device to an earlier class and test it out during class when there is no stress of starting an exam. It would give them time to solve any issues they may have before Exam Day.
